Tethering Ban

Owning a dog can be fun and rewarding but also brings with it personal responsibility for caring for the dog. Animal welfare activists in Hillsborough County are celebrating a ruling banning animal tethering. There will now be a 6 month education period before enforcement starts. Some breeds of dog require more training than others and some animals have simply been tethered instead of being properly trained. It is hoped that the new ruling will encourage more responsible dog ownership. Ownership of certain breeds may also affect your home insurance. Contact your Florida insurance agency for more information if you’re uncertain about your policy.

The new anti-tethering ban will mean you cannot tie your dog up and leave it unattended. This is applicable even if the dog has a food and water supply available; and even if it is in your own backyard. Tethered dogs may not socialize well and those tethered for long periods may be more prone to biting. The suffering the dogs may have to endure while tethered is part of the reason for the ban.

The implications of your dog biting someone can be severe. Well-treated, trained and cared for dogs with good temperaments are rarely involved in such incidents. Do your homework on the best breed of dog for you before you buy, as it may save you much heartache.  A key part of this homework is contacting your Florida insurance agency to find out if purchasing a particular breed may have an impact on your insurance.
